Come By Me

Here we are, moving into the tail end of the summer season. As we look forward to the beginning of a new school year and a change in the light and the weather, let's let music accompany our transition.

Today, a song that was very formative and inspirational to me in my youth. In 1999, I was a freshman in high school and just beginning to awaken to the world of jazz. At the time, Harry Connick, Jr. was just transitioning from his wunderkind phase into the adult persona we know of him now, and the album Come By Me was a benchmark. Including many old standards as he always had, his original songs were taking on more maturity, even within their playfulness, and the title track from the album is a perfect example of how.

"Come By Me" begins with Connick's signature New Orleans piano stylings, rocking and sliding around the keyboard with glee and ease...and just wait for the big band's entrance! I wanted to play like that -- and I learned to, best I could, anyhow! This song taught me so much about my fingers and the keyboard beyond the classical challenges I had accepted before, as well as how to create an exciting arrangement. I still just adore this song, so I figured I might as well share it with all of you! I hope you have some simple fun listening today.

Come by me, come talk to me baby Tell me how we can combine Will you be my sunshine forever Will you be a friend of mine Try me out and if you get excited Take me home, I'd love to be invited Once we're there, I'm sure you'll be delighted We can rock all night Wait and see, we might fit together That would be my lucky day Come by me, come love with me baby Maybe we could run away

Pray...

God of Joy,

Thank you for music that inspires and songs that make us happy.

Even in our separation, God, help us to feel the deep delight of your love for all. Amen.
